New Saab 9-4X World Premiere: Scandinavian Choice for the Crossover Segment

The new 9-4X brings unique Saab design and engineering values to the growing mid-size crossover segment. With distinctive Scandinavian and aircraft-inspired looks, it also offers car-like handling and ride characteristics that challenge class benchmarks.
Making its world premiere at next month’s Los Angles Auto Show, the 9-4X expands Saab’s product portfolio to three car lines and will provide a fresh, alternative choice for independently-minded crossover buyers. It is an important next-step in the Swedish brand’s renaissance as an independent premium car manufacturer.
Muscular and sporty to drive, the 9-4X is aligned in looks and size between the 9-3X all-rounder and new 9-5 sedan. Outside and inside, it communicates its Saab identity with clean, uncluttered design and signature motifs, such as its wraparound-effect windshield, ice block lighting theme, driver-focused cockpit and flexible cargo handling.

In true Saab tradition, the 9-4X delivers on its sporty persona. It is configured around a unique, purpose-designed crossover body structure, which has been key to delivering its exceptional handling and ride properties. Car-like driving dynamics are supported by Saab’s advanced all-wheel-drive system, Saab XWD, and DriveSense adaptive chassis control.

Under the hood, nestles a choice of compact and efficient V6 engines, naturally-aspirated or turbocharged. The 265 hp, 3.0-liter motor for the entry-level model features direct fuel injection and variable valve timing; while the 300 hp, 2.8-liter exchanges direct injection for twin-scroll turbocharging and is exclusive to top-of-line Aero variants. Both engines are mated to six-speed automatic transmissions under adaptive, electronic control.

“The 9-4X significantly broadens the appeal of the Saab brand,” says Saab Automobile CEO Jan Åke Jonsson. “It gives us entry to the fast-growing crossover segment with a vehicle that reflects our brand values in key areas, such as progressive Scandinavian design and sporty, responsible driving performance. The 9-4X is an exciting package and we’re confident it will appeal to many existing Saab owners, as well as win new customers for the brand.”

The 9-4X goes on sale in North America in May next year, with sales in Europe and other global markets due to begin from August. Prices will be announced shortly before sales commence.

Vilken dieselmotor kommer i 9-4x ? Det borde vara 200-240hk med automat som tillval eller ? 4 eller 6 cyl ?

Car looks great, however I am not impressed! It was supposed to have the Ecotech 4 cylinder turbo as an option - I do not want a silly V6! Put a 1.9TTID into it and I'll be interested in one.... stupid V6! What is the 3.0L from anyways? It better not be the Opel motor making another round... DIESEL for the USA or Bust!

Great, great looking car! Like burnsside I am looking forward to the dieselversions, any v6 in 2011 is of course geared towards the us where co2 footprint and fuel consumption still seems to be of less importance when push comes to shovel, I mean they´re still buying pick-ups and huge SUVs......

    Hej.
Jag är helfrälst för SAAB. Har haft ett antal SAABar och skulle nog kunna tänka mig en 9-4X men är lite tveksam eftersom produktionen läggs i Mexico den borde vara i Sverige det skapar fler arbetstillfällen.

The world is probably not looking forward to an SUV but this otherwise pretty 9-4 was already on the GM shelf.
I agree on not offering only V6's (although silky...it is not to today's standards of low mpg's). I am much more looking forward to a crisp new 9-3 that should be Saab's moneymaker.
PS I like the new 9-5 although the center console still could use the magic Saab touch.

“It gives us entry to the fast-growing crossover segment..." Sorry, Saab - you are forgetting something that was lost in 2002. Saab was crossover before we had crossover! Remember the hatchback on the 2002 9-3? White not fully a crossover, Saab had the multi-purpose approach in automobiles for years and years before anyone else. Here is one person who hopes Spyker can take us back to the innovation we loved in Saab. (instead of trying to sell us on a cadillac srx- or any other car - subaru, tahoe, etc - with a saab suit)

Yes! I´ve been waiting for this car to replace my BMW X3 which I purchased because of lack of SUV:s from Saab (but I couldn´t divorce myself from the 9-5 SC, I had to keep it)... It worries me though, that the info says nothing about diesel engines. Will I be forced to wait even longer?

In Europe 9-4X can succeed only with outstanding diesel engine. For this particular size of car the V6 is vasting of the money. For petrol lovers 2.0T is the right solution. However 2.0TTiD would be the winner.

I still have to drive with my fantastic 9-5 Tid Vector Estate for another 1,5 years and then I want to buy my first SUV. But with no diesel this will be not possible due to my 50.000 kms/annum. I don't like the Q5 and X3 because these SUV's are "small" and to expensive. I'm convinced that the 190 hp diesel will be the right fit for this Saab SUV, so let us be positive and see what the near future will bring, hybrid?

I will never drive a car of this size with a 4 cyl! I came to saab 2003 with the 9-3 4cyl. aero, had two engine damages and only bought the next when they offered the V6. The missing thing is a real powerfull 5 or 6 cyl, 250+hp. DIESEL with a state of the art co2 footprint and fuel consumption. I am looking forward and make my decision pro/contra new car from saab in the middle of next year.

Wenn mal wieder eine neue Modellreihe auf den Markt kommt!! jeah, sind noch nicht alle Varianten von anfangan lieferbar. Ich bin überzeugt der Dieselhammer wird alle überzeugen. I have been waiting for this car for ages, but with no turbocharged gasoline engines of 200hp + available, I will opt for a BMW X3 or a Volvo XC60 D5 (despite the fact that it has a diesel engine) when I replace my 4th Hirch tuned Saab 95 estate next autumn.
The Norwegian tax system will make the 3L V6 far to expensive for me to even remotely consider. It will in no way be worth the money Saab will have to ask for it.

Well, I agree with most of the comments about the new cars from SAAB. Great cars! Good job! However, I will probably wait for a couple of years before I order a new SAAB. I like the 9-4 X but I would like to have the 1,9 TTID. Maybe we can hope for a nice diesel engine from BMW? Maybe the new 9-3. I can wait. I´m hanging on to my old 9-5 estate and my 9-3 TiD. The latter one has only got 350.000 km and It´s as good as new... Only 4,2-5,5 l diesel/10 km and nice acceleration when needed... Interesting... Will I buy a new SAAB or a Chinese one? We will see. I hope for a SAAB but then they have to get rid of the old school tech from US...

Saab is loosing its core values!
Saab had considered turbo charged vehicule and downsizing head of all other manufacturer and now what? a studid v6 of 3l with mediocre output and an aging v6 2.8 turbo from GM? HELP! go back to amazing 4 cyl with stunning power AND torque and improve mileage / vibration / top rev'
Last but not least work on vehicule weight once again Saab had on edge on this and now...

I'm disappointed that the 2011 Saab 9-4x will not offer diesel engines in the U.S. Saab will lose a competitive edge to those manufacturers that do. I am looking for a reason to buy a 9-4x when they are introduced in the U.S. A diesel engine option would do it.

Also the fact that SAAB is a little bit Dutch now, I really considered to buy this SAAB in 2011. My Q7 is now almost five years old (in may 2011) and was really going for the 9-4X, until................I noticed that there isn't a diesel available. Sorry SAAB missed chance!

New?? It is just another GM misfit with a Saab badge. It is really shameful to see that Saab is still "introducing" GM-Saabs with GM engines, GM platforms, GM interior parts and so on. Just like the "new" 9-5: platform from the Opel Insignia, seats and dashboard parts form Opel, engines from Opel..... that is not a real Saab to me! And the people who are crying for a diesel should bear in mind, that the diesel is also a GM engine! Where has the real Saab spirit gone? Where are the real innovative Saab technologies? I am really disappointed. I am sorry that I have to say this, but the real Saab identity ceased to exist when the production of the classic 900 was stopped in 1983. From then on Saab produced cars that are no real Saabs anymore. It makes me sad, that Spyker doesn't keep their promise to build REAL Saabs again. The first thing Victor Muller does: he buys BMW engines. Hallo, mister Muller, you promised to build REAL Saabs, remember? Shame on you!

All this talk about silly V6's

Please put a decent V6 3.0 diesel in it. Preferably one from BMW as you now have a tie up with them. This engine is brilliant. Performance and economy. In fact put this engine into all SAAB's, especially the 9-5 estate 4wd.

I am driving SAAB now for more than 25 years, currently, 2 years old 9-3. Would consider, crossover, (easy step in, view and safety) the 9-4 next year. However, with the high gasoline prices in Europe, it is time for a hybrid (plug in) whether it is diesel peugeot 3008 or gasoline. Unfortunately, for SAAB, as a truly loyal customer there is a big chance I will change brands. Thus, come up with a solution soon!
