Saab Automobile and BMW enter agreement for supply of gasoline engines

Today, Saab Automobile and BMW announced an agreement for the supply of engines to be used in next-generation Saab vehicles. Under the purchase, supply and development agreement, BMW will supply Saab with 4-cylinder 1.6 liter turbocharged gasoline engines from 2012. The engines will be adapted to meet Saab’s specific requirements.
The contract was signed on Wednesday in Trollhättan, Sweden. Participating in the signing were Saab Automobile CEO Jan Åke Jonsson, Saab Automobile Chairman Victor Muller and Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Sales and Marketing.

Announcing the deal, Saab Automobile CEO Jan Åke Jonsson said: “It gives me great pleasure to confirm this exciting new relationship. BMW’s engines and their fuel savings innovations are widely regarded as a benchmark in the premium segment. We look forward to integrating this technology into our next-generation vehicles in a true Saab way.”

Victor Muller, Chairman of Saab Automobile, said: “This is a major step for Saab on our road to becoming a profitable independent premium car maker. In line with our strategy, we will continue to capitalize on our own engineering expertise while also working with the very best partners. Both parties are open to explore further opportunities as part of this relationship in the future.”

Ian Robertson, Executive Sales and Marketing Director of BMW, added: “We are continuing to expand our powertrain system sales business worldwide as planned as part of our Strategy Number ONE. Today’s agreement marks another important milestone along this route. We are delighted to support Saab with our engine expertise. Our engines have a clear lead over the competition when it comes to fuel consumption, emissions and performance.”

Endlich dieses Geschenk. Ein Premium-Motor in einem Premium-Auto. Dies ist der Anfang einer wunderschön' Kombi und profitabler als Opel-Motoren. Auf dass diese Zusammenarbeit möglichst lange besteht.

The biggest benefit will be diesels, the sooner the better in the US -
the 1.6 won't go in the 9-5 in america (could in europe of course) so it will probably be 2.0 w/ DI and possibly twin turbo close to 280 hp I bet.
Just hope they don't do stupid sh!t like plastic water pump parts and other BMW durability failures... Also Saab sourced electricals, expect Bosch engine parts to last as long as they do now.
Could be a super engine in a 9-2 as well - if it's light enough

Today is a landmark for Saab Automobile, presenting cooperation with BMW and future use of their fuel consumption saving engines. Together with Swedish ePower engines combining the good historical Saab era and modern thinking I congratulate and celebrate Saab!

A long time ago petrol cars were poluting. Engineering development has changed that over the years. It is completely shocking to realize peoples lack of knowledge with respect to Diesel engines. Diesel engines have gone through the same kind of developments as the petrol engine before them.

If this helps Saab return to profitability, then great. Just seems strange that Saab, who has been known for their turbo 4's for years and years is going outside of Trollhättan for the next generation

hmm... not impressed. Saab's 2.0t is awesome. 210HP, smooth, reliable. BMW is not a turbo expert, Audi/VW has had many issues and recalls over the past decade with their turbos.

well, as long as it's as good or better than the current 2.0t, 210HP, then I understand the need to save cash in the near term.

Golfhunter seems to be totally without knowledge about what European and Japanese car producers have achieved with diesel engines!
Stronger engines with half the fuel consumption, without pollution.

Au Québec aussi c'est un moteur diesel que nous attendons. La nouvelle d'une entente avec BMW c'est bien, mais un modèle turbo diesel et hatchback de surcroît serait encore mieux.

    This is wonderful.
Now, your best move will be to put those engines into the ORIGINAL Saab 96 platform. Remember: if you want to recapture the real spirit of Saab, you need to build the strongest, safest 900 Kg car in the world... AGAIN.
Update the lenses, seal the water leaks, put in a modern interior, and apply 200 horsepower to the front wheels. I'll be standing in line at the dealership to buy one.

I am delighted to announce a partnership with BMW, which is an engine of choice. But I am surprised that it only covers the petrol engines, an area where Saab has always performed well (except perhaps in terms of direct injection) while its current diesel engines are obsolete ... BMW is an excellent engine diesel engines with lately that could also be a smart partnership with the entry into force of Euro 5?

    Quelle excellente nouvelle!

    Bravo SAAB
